The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art is committed to providing an inclusive and engaging platform for the art of our time. We are looking for an Associate Director, Legacy Giving to lead the revitalization of SFMOMA’s legacy giving program as a senior staff member of the Philanthropy team.

Reporting to and partnering with the Director of Project Philanthropy, the Associate Director, Legacy Giving is responsible for managing a strategic legacy gift program that employs industry best practices in estate planning to result in increased financial contributions to the museum. They will oversee the growth of the Grace McCann Morley Legacy Society, which honors donors who have made a commitment to the museum in their estate plans. The Associate Director, Legacy Giving will manage the Legacy Giving Associate, a new position created to support the administration of the program.

Strategy

  • Lead the development and implementation of goals, strategies, tactics and metrics to cultivate and solicit individual funders to increase revenue and donor engagement.
  • Develop equitable best practices for a legacy giving program and implement a data-driven continual improvement process to elevate the program on an ongoing basis.
  • Keep up to date on the most current estate planning techniques and related legacy gifts and charitable giving tax laws and regulations.

Solicitation and Stewardship

  • Serve as liaison and main contact for portfolio of individual donors, identifying new prospects, prioritizing a support pipeline, and soliciting funders.
  • Ascertain and create the most mutually beneficial planned giving vehicles for the prospect and SFMOMA, producing gift illustrations.
  • Collaborate effectively with donors and their professional advisors in the structuring and implementation of legacy gifts.
  • Work with Philanthropy colleagues, the Museum Director, Trustees and other appropriate staff, as needed, to cultivate and secure funding.
  • Oversee donor stewardship to ensure an excellent experience that meets funders’ objectives.
  • Organize event planning for the Morley Legacy Society (1-2 events/tours annually), with support from the Enterprise Events team.

Program Administration and Management

  • Provide estate administration and facilitate the processing of complex gifts.
  • Track the progress of prospecting and stewardship efforts in the database and via a moves management system, and report on this progress on a regular basis.
  • Ensure legal, regulatory, and organizational compliance in the processing of all planned gifts.
  • Manage, develop, and effectively motivate the Legacy Giving associate.
  • Lead the marketing and promotion of the Morley Legacy Society, in collaboration with colleagues from the Marketing, Design, and Membership teams.

Community

  • Communicate with colleagues in an effective and timely manner, sharing information about prospects and donors to contribute to a culture of transparency and efficiency.
  • Build strong and productive relationships with colleagues throughout the museum, especially with the General Counsel and Finance staff.
  • Maintain relationships within the planned giving landscape at a local and national level.
